On Sunday morning in the vicinity of Pearl Harbor, on December 7, 1941, Japanese Navy launched a surprise attack on a military base of the US. The Japanese attacked the United States as a preventive measure with the hope of eliminating the American Navy and gaining air supremacy in the Pacific. Their goal was to conduct military operations against Burma, Thailand, and Western US possessions in the Pacific Ocean without the interference of the powerful US Navy. Japanese achieved only a partial success, since the modern US surface ships, were not stationed there and were not affected. The US declared war on Japan on the same day and thereby entered the WWII. America became an active participant in the War, their position was a sharp contrast to their isolation politics from the past decade. By attacking Pearl Harbor Japanese wanted to neutralize the US Pacific Fleet, which was a major power in the Pacific, and therefore to protect their conquered possessions in China and the Dutch East Indies.
