Работой по составлению представляемых читателю планов, руководил Александр Леонтьевич Майер (1792–1864), член Комиссии для учебных пособий, начальник архива Инженерного департамента Военного министерства, археолог, известный знаток топографии Петербурга. Сбор и систематизация материалов продолжались с 1833 по 1838 год, в результате чего были сформированы семь рукописных рабочих атласов, послуживших основой для составления семи исторических планов Петербурга.
