This thesis presents the first successful realization of a compact, low-noise, and few-cycle light source in the mid-infrared wavelength region. By developing the technology of pumping femtosecond chromium-doped II-VI laser oscillators directly with the emission of broad-stripe single-emitter laser diodes, coherent light was generated with exceptionally low amplitude noise — crucial for numerous applications including spectroscopy at high sensitivities. Other key parameters of the oscillator's output, such as pulse duration and output power, matched and even surpassed previous state-of-the-art systems. As a demonstration of its unique capabilities, the oscillator's powerful output was used to drive — without further amplification — the nonlinear generation of coherent mid-infrared light spanning multiple octaves. The resulting table-top system uniquely combines high brilliance and ultrabroad spectral bandwidth in the important mid-infrared spectral range.

This book is a new textbook on processor architecture. What is new is not the topic, even though actual multicore and multithreaded designs are depicted, but the way processor architecture is presented. The book presents a succession of RISC-V processor implementations in increasing difficulty (non pipelined, pipelined, deeply pipelined, multithreaded, multicore). Each implementation is shown as an HLS (High Level Synthesis) code in C++ which can really be synthesized and tested on an FPGA based development board. The book can be useful for three reasons. First, it is a novel way to introduce computer architecture. The codes given can serve as labs for a processor architecture course. Second, the book content is based on the RISC-V Instruction Set Architecture, which is an open-source machine language promised to become the machine language to be taught, replacing DLX and MIPS. Third, all the designs are implemented through the High Level Synthesis, a tool which is able to translate a C program into an IP (Intellectual Property). Hence, the book can serve to engineers willing to implement processors on FPGA and to researchers willing to develop RISC-V based hardware simulators.

This IOT LAB BOOK is primarily compiled to support the university courses on Internet of Things: Systems Design at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. But you can follow the tutorials without attending the course. This lab book guides you through a series of labs. Each lab has its objectives. It is expected that you should be able to complete each lab session within two hours (most of the time, much less). This lab book does assume that you have some amount of networking knowledge. Further, it is important to mention that IoT, by nature, is a broad subject. Therefore, in a few lab sessions, we cannot teach you all the topics in-depth. For example, Arduino programming use C/C++ programming languages. However, we do not expect you to be an expert on C/C++ to follow the lab session. However, if you have some background, you will find some known concepts in action and feel comfortable. If you have never seen C/C++ before, you will, of course, feel nervous and sometimes will feel lost.
