10,000 hours. That’s what it takes to be an expert at anything. Art. Sport. Music. And Data. You might not yet have clocked your quota of designing databases, business intelligence applications, reports, or analytics.
But we live in a connected world, so you can gather the expertise you need for any situation by tapping into the people who can collectively claim 10,000 or even 100,000 hours.
The data mindset playbook is an anthology of thought-provoking stories and anecdotes from data experts across geographies and industries. It will give you the lens to clearly see the forest and the trees in your data landscape.
Not long-ago businesses tasked their IT Departments with finding answers. Answers become more plentiful as databases and reporting and analytics software proliferated. As everybody was able to find answers, they stopped bringing us competitive advantage. What enables today’s companies and individuals to stand out from the crowd is asking better questions. The most impactful questions are the most naïve, like “Why is it so difficult to get a cab when I need one?” That simple question, when combined with an understanding of data, how to find it and analyze it, led to the rideshare concept. Its business model challenged the legacy city transportation norms on a worldwide scale and demonstrated how the right questions can change industries.
For over a decade we have accompanied leaders of organizations on their transformation journeys. From global giants to worthy non-profits, from agile upstarts to some of the oldest institutions, we have helped them develop and execute their data strategies. Our interventions have spanned teaching, workshops, and hands on consulting. Our aim was always to inspire and guide, their success came through their ability to collaborate and iterate. We noticed that these organizations had something in common. Data had been the preserve of the technologists, which left the organization bereft of data literacy. Organizations had more data than they could ever imagine, but institutionally they lacked an imagination of how that data can be used to transform its business, their industry, and our world.
We have been at the data frontline as developers and business decision makers performing analyses and presenting insights. We have crafted the business cases that resulted in strategic investments in data. And along the way we have had the privilege to work, teach and present alongside some of the most innovative and influential thinkers with respect to data.
