Книга представляет биографию великого русского ученого Юрия Валентиновича Кнорозова (1922-1999), дешифровавшего иероглифическую письменность майя. Автор книги доктор исторических наук, профессор, директор Мезоамериканского центра им. Ю.В. Кнорозова Российского государственного гуманитарного университета Галина Гавриловна Ершова, была его ученицей. Рассказывается о драматической и вместе с тем удивительной судьбе, в которой, как в зеркале, отразилась исключительно сложная эпоха в истории России. Неслучайно сам Кнорозов иронично именовал себя «дитя сталинского времени». Но вся его жизнь доказывает, что благородство и подлость, отвага и трусость являются универсальными человеческими качествами, которые не зависят ни от эпохи, ни от системы, ни от обстоятельств.
