Рассмотрена архитектура Запада XX в. в контексте художественной культуры современного капиталистического общества. Прослежены связи архитектурных концепций с эстетическими воззрениями в основных видах искусства. Эволюция архитектурной мысли сопоставлена с течениями общехудожественного характера. Дан анализ различных поисков образной выразительности в связи со стилистическими исканиями на протяжении XX в. Рассмотрены наиболее сложные проблемы западной архитектуры: синтеза искусств, традиционного формообразования и новизны, подчеркиваются противоречия в их трактовке.
