Here are to be found a representative collection of some of his most important articles relating to the study of Ottoman monuments in the Balkans; mosques tekkes, baths, caravanserais, fountains, ‘imaras, urban planning and domestic architecture. Mosques that are little known are given special attention, for example in Kosovo, Macedonia, Bulgaria, and Thrace, as is the better known mosque of Babadag in Romania (IX, pp. 205-20). The articles, and indeed the volume as a whole, are by no means technical at the expense of artistry, architectural at the expense of the historical and the social data that are to be derived from Ottoman records, and from inscriptions and vakfies. Throughout the preface and the text there are pages of wide interest to Ottomanists and to students of the Muslim Balkan communities. Byzantine frontiers in the fifteenth century (V), the grave(s) of the BektashT saint Sari Saltik (IX), and provincial elements and tendencies in Ottoman architecture (X), are but three examples of contributions of wider appeal.
