Here one of the all-time masters of woodworking instruction shows you how to build 70 projects of his own design for children and adults. He explains procedures in easy-to-follow steps and illustrates them with 125 drawings and nearly 200 photos.

For nearly all projects, you’ll have the option to use hand tools exclusively or a combination of hand and power tools.
In the author’s view, the choice of tools determines production time mainly, not quality. “After all,” he says, “a carefully cut curve looks the same whether cut with a jigsaw or a coping saw.”

The book begins with a comprehensive chapter on tools and materials: wood selection, tool use, fastening options, wood finishing, and methods for transferring cutting patterns from the book’s pages onto wood.

Next come 44 toy projects. This section is introduced by a chapter showing all the secrets for making a variety of wheels and axles—needed for most of the toys. The toys range in size and intricacy from building blocks, lap games, and wheeled animals to a rocking horse, a coaster wagon, and a vintage-style go-cart with brakes and steering assembly.

The book concludes with 36 gift and furniture projects such as lamps, tables, shelving, and plant containers. lncidentally, this section begins with a short course on lathe work, which you’ll find helpful for turning vases, candlesticks, and a nut bowl.

Although many do-it-yourselfers undertake projects primarily to save money, the author encourages tackling projects “just for the fun of doing them—and perhaps for the added joy of giving the finished projects as gifts.”

In fact, while building the toys, the author found that his grandchildren were not content to wait for project completion. They were determined to assist. As a result, grandfather and grandchildren got double the enjoyment from the toys. And the grandchildren acquired skills along with a sense of pride in their handiwork. Of course, if you decide to let a child join in, you’ll need to choose tools and temper instruction to the child’s readiness. On this count, the author offers solid child-tested guidelines.

Whatever your woodworking back-ground, tool arsenal, or project choices, you’ll find plenty of stimulation and guidance here, in a book deserving a place on every home workbench.
