Statistics is made simple with this award-winning guide to using R and applied statistical methods. With real-world examples and a step-by-step approach, this book provides the practical skills students need to use statistical methods in their research. Hands-on exercises and online resources created by the author allow students to practice their skills using the data sets and R scripts from the book with detailed screencasts that accompany each script.

There are two notable changes to the second edition that require a word of explanation. First, we extend and deepen the coverage of Bayesian methods across most of chapters of the book.

The first edition introduced Bayes’ theorem in the same way that most introductory statistics books currently do, limiting the discussion of Bayes to how it applies to events (Chapter 4). The second edition enlarges the coverage of Bayesian methods to include discrete and continuous random variables (Chapters 5 and 6), approximate Bayesian computation (Chapter 7), credible intervals (Chapter 8), inference (Chapter 10), differences between two population parameters (Chapter11), simple linear regression (Chapter 12), and multiple regression (Chapter 13). Chapter 12 and 13 introduce the use of Stan, a state-of-the-art collection of analytic algorithms that can be used to find solutions to Bayesian problems and that can be downloaded from the R system as the rstanarm package. In many instances, we compare and contrast the analytic results one gets from using Bayesian methods with those one arrives at by employing frequentist procedures.

The second notable change to this edition lies the tight coordination between (a) the screencasts and scripts that can be found on the website and (b) the examples and images that are found in the book itself.
