Настоящее руководство выходит четверть века спустя после аналогичных публикаций. В нем подведены итоги сорокалетнего изучения автором и его сотрудниками клинических и патопсихологических особенностей умственно отсталых детей всех возрастов, а также подростков. В руководстве помещены материалы, посвященные истории развития представлений об умственной отсталости, этиологии и патогенезу психического недоразвития. Излагаются современные методы многосторонней диагностики и дифференциальный диагноз умственной отсталости. Основное место в содержании книги занимает подробное описание систематики, клинической картины разных степеней и форм умственной отсталости. В отличие от традиционных представлений сделан акцент на существовании позитивной динамики развития психических нарушений при умственной отсталости, а также на нередко наблюдающихся негативных изменениях в ее клинической картине: декомпенсации, невротические, поведенческие и психотические расстройства, осложняющие социальную адаптацию этих детей и подростков. Большое внимание уделено современной терапии, коррекционно-педагогическим мерам и реабилитации детей и подростков с отклонениями психического развития, которые осуществляются в семьях и специальных образовательных учреждениях.
