This book provides detailed descriptions of downlink non-orthogonal multiple transmissions and uplink non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) from the aspects of majorly used 5G new radio scenarios and system performance.

For the downlink, the discussion focuses on the candidate schemes in 3GPP standards which are not only applicable to unicast services but also to broadcast/multicast scenarios. For the uplink, the main target scenario is massive machine-type communications where grant-free transmission can reduce signaling overhead, power consumption of devices and access delays. The design principles of several uplink NOMA schemes are discussed in-depth, together with the analysis of their performances and receiver complexities.

Not only considered as a strategic technology of industry that attracts significant attention from many countries, 5G has also triggered quite high expectations of human society to effectively support enhanced mobile broadband, ultra-reliable low-latency communications and massive machine-type communication. In the communications industry, greater interest is seen in the innovative upgrade of the systems by integrating advanced wireless and network technologies of 5G. In cellular communications, a key performance indicator is how many users and throughput can be supported simultaneously by a cell. Technologies that enable the multiplexing of multiple users are called multiple access technologies.

Multiple access is also a key enabling technology in 5G. However, there are more than one multiple access technology in 5G. For enhanced mobile broadband services, while OFDM with cyclic prefix (CP-OFDM) is adopted for 5G physical channels, OFDM with spread discrete-time Fourier Transform (DFT-s-OFDM) can also be used for the uplink. For massive machine-type communication with a low data rate, the overhead of OFDMA is significant, which results in low efficiency of transmission. This prompts non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) in which multiple users share the same time and frequency resources and rely on interference cancelation techniques at the receivers to separate each user’s signal. Several NOMA schemes have been proposed so far, including multi-user shared access (MUSA), sparse-code multiple access (SCMA), resource-spread multiple access (RSMA) and pattern-division multiple access (PDMA). The standardization work is ongoing.

This book is not merely to discuss various NOMA schemes. Rather, it begins with the fundamental theory and technology of NOMA, followed by the discussion of downlink unicast and multicast/broadcast and the comparison between direct symbol superposition, bit-flipping-based superposition and bit partition–based superposition. For the uplink NOMA, the book focuses on grant-free transmissions that include contention-free and contention-based designs and algorithms.

There are quite a number of published books on 5G wireless and networks, but very few are specifically about NOMA. This book is devoted to the basic technologies of NOMA and contains theoretical principles, data analysis, basic algorithms, evaluation methodology and simulation results. The book has clear structures and abundant information, written in plain language. It can either serve the general public or be used as a reference book for university courses in the field of digital communications.

Devoted to the basic technologies of NOMA and its theoretical principles, data analysis, basic algorithms, evaluation methodology and simulation results, this book will be an essential read for researchers and students of digital communications, wireless communications engineers and those who are interested in mobile communications in general.
