This textbook provides a comprehensive overview of smart grids, their role in the development of new electricity systems, as well as issues and problems related to smart grid evolution, operation, management, control, protection, entities and components.

Another book on smart grids published? Too much seems to have been published recently on smart grids and intelligent power systems. Over the last two decades, journals and whole conferences are devoted to the topic. Well-funded research programs and government-regulated subsidies stimulate and encourage investment in the new power systems. Smart grid, in several ways, represents a compilation of concepts, technologies and operating practices intended to bring the electric grid into the 21st century. All elements of smart grid include important engineering, economic and policy issues. The smart grid has offered unprecedented opportunities and alternatives for utilities, research and academic communities and end-user participations to the electric grid management, operation, control and market, enhancing the reliability, resilience, sustainability and capabilities for industry and customer choices in energy systems. The smart grid has made possible to set up microgrids that could be operated as standalone (island) operation modes in critical operating conditions or grid-connected in normal operation. Such small installations can enhance the reliability of regional electric power systems when the larger grid is faced with major contingencies. In addition, the smart grid allows microgrids to optimize the use of volatile and intermittent renewable energy resources and enhance the sustainability of regional power systems. Power system state estimation plays key role in the energy management systems (EMS) of providing the best estimates of the electrical variables in the grid that are further used in functions such as contingency analysis, automatic generation control, dispatch and others.

The purpose of this textbook is to provide a comprehensive overview of smart grids, their role in the development of electricity systems, as well as issues and problems related to smart grid evolution, operation, management, control, protection, entities and components. This is accomplished by defining smart grids, highlighting the major drivers for deployment, outlining the range of actors and issues that need to be engaged and tackled and a vision for electricity system structure and development. The goal and aim of this book are to provide the engineers, students and interested readers with the essential knowledge of the power and energy systems, smart grid fundamentals, concepts and features, as well as the main energy technologies, including how they work and operate, characteristics and they are evaluated and selected for specific applications. The book is divided in 11 chapters, covering energy and environmental issues, basic of power systems and introduction to renewable energy, distributed generation and energy storage, smart grid challenges, benefits and drivers and smart power distribution. Last four chapters are focusing on smart grid communication, transmission, power flow analysis, smart grid design tools, energy management and microgrids. Students or readers using this book must have only fundamental knowledge of mathematics, physics and basic of power engineering as usually expected for most of the students enrolled in engineering programs. Likewise, this book assumes no specific knowledge of smart grids, or in-depth power and energy engineering; it guides the reader through basic understanding form topic to topic and inside each topic.

This book originates from courses that the author taught in the areas of energy and power engineering, renewable energy systems, distributed generation, industrial energy systems, smart grids, microgrids and energy management, as well as from the research projects that the author was involved in the last 25 years. The book can be used as required or recommended textbook for an introduction course in smart grids that can be delivered in a 15-week semester or a 10-week quarter. The instructor can easy customize the materials, chapters and topics included in agreement with specific course outline. The author is fully indebted to the students, colleagues and co-professionals for their feedback and suggestions over the years, and last but not least to the editor technical staff for support and help. A rich, comprehensive and up-to-date literature is also included for professionals, engineers, students and interested readers in smart grid topics.
